How to close the product feedback loop
Most teams are fine at collecting feedback. Far fewer finish the loop, and an unfinished loop teaches customers that telling you things is a waste of their time.

1. Collect it somewhere customers can see
Feedback buried in a private inbox is invisible to everyone except the person who received it. A public board does two things a private backlog cannot: it lets other customers add weight to a request instead of filing a duplicate, and it shows people you are listening before you have built anything.
The common mistake is making submission too easy and triage impossible. Categories, boards and statuses are worth setting up before you invite anyone.
2. Prioritise on evidence, not volume of escalation
Votes are a weak signal on their own — they measure who found the board, not who needs the feature. Read them alongside comment threads, the accounts behind the votes, and how demand has moved over time.
Be explicit about what you will not build. A request marked "not planned" with one sentence of reasoning is more respectful than one that sits in "under review" for two years.
3. Tell people when it ships
This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the only one customers directly experience. A changelog entry linked back to the original request means everyone who voted finds out — without anyone writing individual emails.
4. Turn the answer into an article
A shipped feature that nobody can figure out generates the support load the feature was supposed to remove. The changelog says it exists; a help center article says how to use it. Both should be findable in search, not just from inside your app.
Frequently asked questions
Should the feedback board be public?
- For most products, yes — public boards deduplicate requests and demonstrate responsiveness. Keep sensitive or customer-specific requests on a private board.
How often should we publish a changelog?
- Whenever something ships that a customer would notice. Regular small entries build the habit of reading it; quarterly mega-posts do not.
